You won't find Moog's name on a missile. You'll find its actuators steering the fins on one. That's true of Patriot PAC-3, THAAD, GMLRS, and a growing list of hypersonic vehicle programs, and it's why we think the valuation the market is putting on this business deserves to be judged less on where the multiple sits today and more on how much of the hypersonics ramp still isn't reflected in the numbers.

1  The Thesis

Every major weapons prime — Lockheed Martin, RTX, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy — depends on a small set of specialist suppliers to actually make their systems fly straight, steer accurately, and survive the physical punishment of high-speed flight. Moog is one of the most entrenched names in that category, with sole-source positions on platforms including the F-35, the V-22 Osprey, and Atlas V and Delta IV launch vehicles, and it has spent the last several years deliberately extending that same precision motion-control expertise into the fastest-growing and most strategically prioritized corner of modern defense spending: hypersonics and missile actuation.

You flagged the valuation directly, and we want to be equally direct back: this is not a cheap stock. It trades near its own 52-week high, at roughly 37 to 38 times earnings, and the average analyst price target sits barely above where it already trades. That's a real, honest starting point for this note, and different from several other names in this research library where the setup was a beaten-down stock waiting to be rediscovered. Moog is already being discovered. The question this note tries to answer isn't whether the market has noticed Moog's defense and hypersonics exposure — it clearly has — but whether it has fully priced in how much of that exposure is still ahead of the company rather than already inside its backlog.

Three structural advantages sit underneath every part of this thesis: sub-micron precision engineered specifically for extreme environments, decades of proven flight heritage on platforms where a failure is catastrophic rather than merely costly, and deep OEM integration that creates real switching costs once a Moog component is designed into a platform. This is the kind of moat that shows up quietly in a 70-plus-year operating history and an AS9100 aerospace quality certification rather than in a flashy slide, but it's precisely what lets Moog win sole-source positions rather than compete on price every cycle.

Some of that acceleration is genuinely one-time in nature — the tariff claim recovery and prior-year tax credit context are worth noting honestly rather than treating the whole beat as pure operating momentum — but the underlying margin expansion and free cash flow generation are real, recurring improvements, not accounting artifacts.

4  The Hypersonics Thesis, In Its Own Engineering Terms

This is the slide that speaks most directly to what you flagged as the core of your interest, and it's worth walking through in some technical detail because the engineering case is more concrete than most "hypersonics exposure" claims we see across defense-tech coverage.

Hypersonics is the newest and highest-growth piece, but it sits inside a much broader missile-actuation franchise that already spans some of the most heavily funded programs in the U.S. arsenal: GMLRS actuation deployed on HIMARS and M270 rocket systems, custom actuators inside Lockheed Martin's PAC-3 MSE contract for Patriot air defense, fin control systems for USSOCOM's Black Arrow cruise missile program, and precision motion hardware for DARPA's X-61A Gremlins recoverable drone system. Missile-program revenue specifically is on track for roughly $275 million in fiscal 2026, more than 20% above the prior year — and management has said publicly that active discussions are underway with prime contractors about multiplying production rates on programs including PAC-3 and THAAD, demand that has not yet flowed down into Moog's reported backlog. That's the part of this thesis we think is genuinely underappreciated: the growth already visible in the numbers may understate what's coming.

We appreciate that Moog's own materials name real constraints rather than only tailwinds: supply-chain bottlenecks, skilled labor shortages, inflation pressure on the industrial segment specifically, and — worth flagging plainly — Parker Hannifin's scaled competitive position following its acquisition of Meggitt, a direct challenge in the same precision motion-control space. A $3.8 billion backlog is an asset only if the company can actually staff and supply its way through converting it into revenue on schedule, and that execution risk is real rather than hypothetical.

9  The Price: Paying Up, With Eyes Open

MOG.A trades at $436.78, within about 2.7% of its 52-week high of $448.85 and more than double its 52-week low of $189.93 — this stock has already had its re-rating, and it happened for good reason. Market cap is $13.83 billion. Trailing P/E is 37.2 times, forward P/E 38.3 times: a genuine premium multiple, though notably far more moderate than several other richly valued defense-tech names in this research library, and arguably reasonable given 15%+ revenue growth, 430 basis points of margin expansion, and 60% adjusted EPS growth in the same quarter. Moog also pays a real, recently increased dividend — a feature few high-growth defense names offer, and a signal of a management team confident enough in cash generation to return capital rather than hoard it entirely for growth.

Analyst coverage here is thinner than on some larger-cap names, and the resulting price targets are correspondingly less decisive: the average sits around $428 to $446, essentially in line with or only modestly above where the stock already trades. We read that not as a lack of enthusiasm but as a lack of urgency — analysts already rate this a consensus Buy, they just haven't yet built the PAC-3 and THAAD production-rate increases management has flagged as "under discussion" into their models, because that demand hasn't hit the backlog yet. If and when it does, we'd expect estimates and targets to move rather than the stock needing to re-rate on multiple expansion alone.

Muffett Lens: we don't think every good investment has to come from a beaten-down stock — sometimes the setup is a genuine compounder trading at a fair-not-cheap price, with a specific, identifiable catalyst still ahead of the numbers. That's Moog. The valuation is a real cost of admission, not an oversight, and we'd rather pay a full price for a business with 70 years of sole-source defense relationships and a live hypersonics engineering advantage than wait for a discount that a company executing this well may simply never offer.

10  What Could Go Wrong

  • Valuation leaves little room for a stumble: at roughly 38 times forward earnings and near its 52-week high, any growth deceleration, margin miss, or delayed program would likely compress the multiple as well as the estimates.
  • Some of the Q3 beat was non-recurring: the tariff claim recovery and prior-year R&D tax credit both flattered this quarter's results, and investors modeling forward growth off this exact base should adjust for that.
  • Competitive pressure from Parker Hannifin is real and scaled: Parker Hannifin's post-Meggitt position is a direct, well-capitalized competitive threat in the same precision motion-control space, named explicitly in Moog's own materials.
  • Execution risk on converting backlog is genuine: supply-chain bottlenecks and skilled labor shortages are both explicitly flagged as current constraints, and a $3.8 billion backlog only matters if it converts to revenue on schedule.
  • The PAC-3/THAAD production increases are still "under discussion," not signed: the incremental upside this note leans on is real but not yet contracted, and could take longer to materialize than the current enthusiasm implies.
  • Defense budget and program risk is structural to the business: Moog's own materials flag the risk of shifting government budgets as an external constraint, and a large share of the growth case depends on continued, well-funded U.S. and allied defense spending.

11  Muffett's Take

Moog is not a rediscovery story or a pullback story — it's a quality story, and the price reflects that. Seventy years of sole-source relationships on platforms from the F-35 to Atlas V, a genuinely differentiated engineering answer to the specific physical problem of hypersonic flight, missile-program revenue growing more than 20% with more demand reportedly still to come, and a management team raising guidance, expanding margins, and paying a growing dividend all at once. None of that is cheap, and we don't think it should be.

What tips this from "good company, fair price" to "good company worth buying at this price" for us is the specific, concrete detail that production-rate increases on PAC-3 and THAAD are already under active discussion but not yet reflected in Moog's backlog or in the modest analyst price targets currently attached to the stock. That's a rare thing in a market this efficient: a visible, near-term catalyst that hasn't been priced in yet, sitting inside a business whose moat needs no explaining.

RATING: BUY — A FULL PRICE FOR A CATALYST THAT ISN'T IN THE NUMBERS YET

Moog trades near its highs at roughly 38 times forward earnings, and we're not going to pretend that's cheap. But 15%+ revenue growth, expanding margins, a $3.3-3.8 billion backlog, a genuinely differentiated hypersonics engineering advantage, and missile-program revenue growing 20%+ with prime contractors reportedly discussing multiplied production rates on PAC-3 and THAAD that haven't yet reached the backlog together make a credible case that today's price hasn't fully captured tomorrow's numbers. We'd buy this as a core, full-sized defense-tech holding rather than a speculative starter position — the valuation is the risk here, not the business.
